2D Rendering Benchmarks
We went out on a limb and included a very powerful, new benchmark to our rendering applications portfolio. Apple develops a great digital effects package called Shake. We took the opportunity to run a new(ish) benchmark script by Lindsay Adams, which you can download here. The benchmark script renders 10 frames under various effects using one or multiple CPUs. We sum the render times and display them below. The command run for this benchmark is:# shake - exec hardware_test_v01.shk - vv
# shake - cpus 2 - exec hardware_test_v01.shk - vv
Shake utilizes multiple CPUs, a feature most of our other benchmarks lack. You can see clearly how the benchmark scales as multiple CPUs are added; over a 40% increase in performance by going to a second CPU. This is consistent with other benchmarks that we are seeing, which are capable of multiple threads.

Hey Kris, great job on the review. I wanted to let you know that I was pleasantly surprised by your thermal graphs for the inside of the case. I think they're a great idea; and I've never seen them before anywhere else. Keep up the good work.-Scott

I notice that this system is nearly identical to the IBM Intellistation that just arrived on my test bench today. Even the motherboard is identical, as well as the case(exterier looks a bit different, but interier is the same).Makes me wonder if Sun and IBM are actually building these, or outsourcing them to a third party and sticking thier label on them

Just when I was complaining of no top teir dual opteron workstations. It's a shame that the way I'd like it configured costs 18,000 bones. Guess it will just be a pipe dream for a while more.
